After graduating, Maria Montessori worked with socially deprived children and the handicapped. As she worked she began to recognize a need for change in the education system. She then developed the Montessori system to teach the poor children where she worked. She used her skills in experimentation and observation to develop the system that has been adopted throughout the world as one of the most effective ways to teach children. Memphis Montessori schools bear the name of this great woman who contributed a wealth of knowledge to the field of child education. Many of the observations she made years ago are still being used as the foundation of various educational systems. Many of the things we understand about child learning is based on the observations she made while developing the Montessori system.
